Tess Gerritsen is one of the most popular authors around and has sold over 30 million copies of her books across the globe. Her book, Body Double is the focus of the latest episode of Written in Blood and here she talks about this and the rest of her incredible career.
CBSR: Can you recall how you felt when you saw your first novel on bookshelves?
TG: Very vividly! I walked into my local Waldenbooks (no longer in existence, alas), saw my book on the rack, and just gaped. And took pictures, of course!
CBSR: Have you changed as a writer from your first book to your latest one?
TG: I’ve become much bolder, willing to write the crazy story no one expects from me. As I get older, I feel time closing in. Now is the time to write those books I WANT to write.
CBSR: Does real life always inspire you or do ideas just come to you?
TG: About 50 percent of the time, my stories are inspired by news reports. Other books are inspired by conversations, dreams, or my own life.
CBSR: Let’s talk about “Written in Blood”… Had you seen the first series?
TG: It doesn’t air in the US, so I only saw the one episode the producers shared with me online. I thought it was very compelling and Simon brought such warmth and humanity to the story.
CBSR: How did you hear about the case featured in your episode of Written in Blood?
TG: Through news reports. What drew me in was not the story of the murders, but HOW the murderer was brought to justice.
CBSR: Did the case influence your book Body Double?
TG: Yes. I thought about what it would be like to be that young man, knowing that I was descended from a family of murderers. Would it make me wonder about myself, and what darkness lies in my own future? I even had a dream that my own father was a monster, and woke up feeling haunted. That became the story of Body Double, where medical examiner Maura Isles (adopted as an infant) discovers the truth about her birth parents.
CBSR: What was it like visiting Oregon and uncovering information about a true crime?
TG: I already knew the bare facts of the case, but to find the utter ordinariness of the settings was chilling. A suburban park. A busy intersection. Places where we never imagine, in the light of day, that something terrible has happened.
CBSR: Are there any other genres you’d like to write for?
TG: I’ve already written SF, historicals, and romances, so I’m open to all genres. I would love to write another historical.
CBSR: What else are you working on at the moment?
TG: I have a new book coming out in fall 2019 — a twist on The Ghost and Mrs Muir. A young woman moves into what seems to be a haunted house and learns that every woman who’s ever lived there has died there. Plus I have another story that’s still in the research stages...
CBSR: Tess Gerritsen, thank you very much.
Episode 2 of Written in Blood is showing on Tuesday 23rd October at 10pm.
