Meet Geoffrey Wansell, the host of Murder by the Sea
By James W, Monday 21st May 2018

In the new CBS Reality Original series, Murder by the Sea, Geoffrey Wansell presents an astonishing and macabre collection of real life murder cases from the coast of Great Britain. But there’s more to Geoffrey than just being a true crime author, he’s also a well-respected journalist as well as a celebrated biographer.

He cut his journalistic teeth by running the student magazine whilst attending the London School of Economics in the mid-1960s and in 1967 joined The Times as an editorial trainee for a publication that would become TES (Times Education Supplement). He proved himself very quickly and became the news editor in 1969. He continued to write through the 1970s including working for London Broadcasting and Independent Radio and for The Observer newspaper. In the early 1980s he began writing features for The Sunday Telegraph’s Sunday Magazine, but it was with it was with his books Haunted Idol: The Story of the Real Cary Grant and Sir James Goldsmith: The Man and the Myth which were both published in 1982 which opened his writing to a wider audience.

Wansell added another impressive credit to his already remarkable resume in 1989 when he produced When the Whales Came, a movie based on Michael Morpurgo’s much loved book from 1985 which boasted a cast that included David Threlfall, Helen Mirren, Paul Scolfield and David Suchet. Talking of David Suchet, Wansell co-wrote Poirot and Me with Suchet in 2013. His book, The Life of Terence Rattigan (1995) was short-listed for the Whitbread Prize with a new edition published in 2009.

Over the last couple of decades, Wansell has released several books that investigated true life crime, tackling some of the most frightening and horrific cases in recent memory. He was praised for An Evil Love: The Life of Frederick West (1996), which was written after he obtained exclusive access to 150 hours of murderers Fred and Rose West’s tapes and other documents. His true crime book, The Bus Stop Killer, is a portrait of Millie Dowler's killer Levi Bellfield, and was published in 2011. More recently, Lifers: Inside the Minds of Britain's Most Notorious Criminals was published in 2016.

Today, Wansell still writes for some of the most popular newspapers and magazines across the globe.

Murder by the Sea presented by Geoffrey Wansell starts on May 21st at 10pm on CBS Reality.
