A CBS Reality Original Production: Uncovering Melanie’s Murderer
By James, Wednesday 10th August 2016

On the morning of the 9th June 1984 the body of teenager, Melanie Road, was found just yards from her home. It transpired she’d been brutally stabbed in a frenzied attack before being brutally assaulted as she lay dying. Despite intensive investigations, and the work of police forces right across the southwest of Britain, her killer remained undetected for over three decades, until new developments in Forensic Science finally caught up with him.

This is the story of how Melanie’s young life was ended by a callous killer. How a caring family never gave up hope and how dogged police work and the extraordinary revolution of DNA profiling, eventually led to uncovering Melanie’s murderer.

This gripping and timely documentary traces the case from the very beginning when a seemingly innocent night out in a local nightclub turned into a nightmare for the Road Family. Beginning with the horrific discovery of Melanie’s body, the documentary visits the scene of the crime with Anthony Noonan, the milkman who, together with his son, came across her remains that morning.

Detective Hamish Galloway, part of the original investigation team describes how the team approached the case and the frustrations which surrounded the early years as police sought to make a breakthrough. Bath Chronicle journalist, David Symington and his editor Bob Constantine, both of whom reported widely on the case, tell of the mood in the quiet city of Bath at the time and the impact the murder had on the community.

As DNA techniques became more sophisticated towards the end of the 20th Century, Somerset and Avon Police made a determined and concentrated effort to finally solve the case, looking to match DNA found at the scene with the national database. Cold Case team member, Detective Gary Mason, recalls in great detail the extraordinary process, which was set in train and the consistent and unstinting efforts of the force.

DCI Julie Mackay, who led the operation, tells of the ups and downs of the process and the moment when she was able to tell Melanie’s mother that her daughter’s killer had been identified.

Uncovering Melanie’s Murderer on Monday 29th August at 10.00pm, is a study in modern crime solving techniques. It demonstrates, with key witnesses and commentators, how traditional investigative techniques can now be significantly enhanced by the scientific power of DNA profiling.
